Success for Renfrewshire's District Heating Network at the Scottish Public Service Awards 2024

It was another ringing endorsement for our AMIDS District Heating Network (DHN), at this year's Scottish Public Service Awards when we won joint first place in the category for The Sustainability Award (in association with Vattenfall).

A group of people in evening wear stand on a podium smiling to camera The team behind Scotland's 'first-of-its-kind' renewable energy network have done it again! This time-sharing top honours at Tuesday's prestigious ceremony at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Lesley Currie and Vivien Thomson from our City Deal and Infrastructure team were our delighted representatives at the event.

Lesley said: "After winning the Scottish Government—Delivering Excellence Award at the COSLA awards earlier this year, I am delighted that the team have received yet further recognition for delivering this unique, complex and innovative project.

"It has all been made possible by the hard work and commitment of the City Deal and Infrastructure team, and the wider council ambition to meet its net zero targets."

Our innovative District Heating Network (DHN)

This fifth-generation renewable energy network provides heating and hot water to businesses based at the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) site by taking treated water headed for the White Cart River and redirecting it to a new energy centre in Paisley.

There, low temperature heat between five and 18 degrees is extracted through a heat plate exchanger and distributed around a 3.7km loop of underground pipes. This generates energy, for all current and future developments within AMIDS, that is 90% greener than a gas boiler.

The Scottish Public Service Awards are organised by Holyrood Events. The Sustainability Award "demonstrates how an organisation or team has implemented policies, campaigns or technologies to help tackle the climate emergency, contribute to net zero emissions or to increase resilience to climate change in civic society. It recognises those working towards a greener and more sustainable economy that benefits all."

Our proud winners shared the joint award with neighbouring Inverclyde Council who were recognised for their programme 'Improving Inverclyde's environment through peatland restoration and tree planting'.
