Learning and development for council staff
What training and courses there are, how to register for a course, mandatory training courses, digital skills courses, recruitment and selection course, managing discipline and grievance course, the iLearn online learning platform.
What training and courses there are
Many of our courses are online on our iLearn online learning platform that you can do in your own time. There are mandatory training courses that all Council employees must do.
Other courses and training are in-person and have scheduled dates.
Courses and training include:
- Compliance training in data protection, information sharing, information security, records management, and surveillance legislation (RIPSA)
- Health, safety, and wellbeing including looking after your own or other's mental health and wellbeing
- Employee skills and People management courses
- Courses in communication, digital skills, emotional intelligence, living our values, prioritising and scheduling, unconscious bias, change environments, virtual teams
- Courses in coaching, communication skills, challenging conversations, influencing, Our Values, meetings, virtual teams, finance, business continuity, managing change, conflict, discipline and grievance, managing attendance, partnership and joint working, recruitment and selection.
How to register for a course
To register, you must get agreement from your manager first. If they give approval for you to sign up for the course, you can register your interest by completing the course nomination form. If a course doesn't have a confirmed date, you can still complete the form and put your name on the waiting list for that course.
You can look at the details including dates for each course. You can also email us at orgdev.cs@renfrewshire.gov.uk for dates and details of specific courses.
If a course doesn't have a confirmed date, you can put your name on the waiting list for that course. Speak to your manager first and then complete the course nomination form to register your interest.
Mandatory training courses
There are mandatory training courses that everyone working at the council must complete:
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Awareness
- Living Our Values
- Introduction to Freedom of Information (FOI)
- Introduction to Data Protection
- Information Governance Annual Refresher
Colleagues who have network access should also complete:

Digital skills courses
There are a wide range of digital skills courses and learning at every level including:
- Microsoft 365 learning
- Delivering effective presentations
- How we store, share, and collaborate on files
- Presenting data to inform and create impact
Recruitment and selection course
This course is mandatory for all Council employees taking part on a recruitment panel. Delivered on Microsoft Teams, the course covers recruitment and selection best practice, the shortlisting process, and interview considerations.

Managing discipline and grievance course
Delivered on Microsoft Teams, the course covers the approach to discipline and grievance situations, behaviours required as a manager when dealing with these issues, and the opportunity to practice your approach to these situations using scenarios.
