Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

If you have worked from home over the last few years, then the power/charging cables for your laptop, desktop, or screen may need safety tested.

You can check this by looking for a sticker, like the one below on your cable.

If there is no label or the date of previous test was before January 2024 then it's really important to have it tested.

You can do this by bringing your power/charging cable(s) to one of the following drop-in sessions:

  • Renfrewshire House Atrium - Tuesday 22 April - Thursday 24 April - 8am-5pm
  • Johnstone Town Hall - Friday 25 April - 9am-3.30pm
  • Renfrew Town Hall - Friday 25 April - 9am-3.30pm

The test will take no more than 5 minutes and replacement cables will be provided if it fails the test.

What is Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

PAT is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use, preventing potential accidents at home or in the workplace. Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination, but some types of defects can only be found by testing.

More information about PAT is available on the Health and Safety Executive webpage.
