What the consultation is

We asked for your views on our proposal for a public garden on the site of the former Brown Institute in Renfrew.

We asked for feedback from people who work, live or study in Renfrew or the surrounding areas.

We wanted to know:

  • what you thought of the proposed garden designs
  • anything you'd add or remove from the proposed designs
  • any other comments you have on the proposal.

What the proposal is

The new public garden aims to:

  • enhance the town centre environment
  • promote better use of green spaces
  • honour the former Brown Institute.

The proposal includes plans to reuse materials from the previous building, including plaques and original sandstone.

The proposal shows initial designs, the reuse of materials, planting palette and masterplan of the site, proposal visuals and precedent images.

Thank you to everyone who shared their feedback on the proposed Brown Institute Garden.

We received a wide range of valuable input through our in-person event at the Town Hall, the online survey, and the comment boxes available at the library and Town Hall.

Your feedback has reinforced the importance of creating a space that is welcoming and accessible, sustainable for the future, and reflective of Renfrew’s rich heritage.

What you told us

General support

The majority of respondents expressed support for the overall concept, with an emphasis on the importance of ongoing maintenance.

Historical recognition

There was strong support for acknowledging the site's historical significance as the former location of the Brown Institute and Renfrew Castle.

Suggestions for enhancements

Participants recommended the inclusion of a ‘Time to Talk’ bench, appropriate lighting, and a litter bin to enhance the space’s usability and appeal.

Cost and Funding

Residents expressed interest in understanding how the project will be funded.

What happens next

We remain committed to delivering a space that is inclusive and meaningful, making sure the garden becomes a lasting asset for all.

We will now develop and cost more detailed designs and begin the process of making a planning application for the gardens.

We’ll share progress and the final proposals when they are ready.

Design updates

The design team will update the plans to incorporate a designated area for a ‘Time to Talk’ bench, as well as the addition of lighting and a litter bin.

Honouring the site’s history

We are committed to commemorating the site’s heritage. Original stonework from the Brown Institute will be repurposed within the garden, and existing plaques and signage will be reinstated.

Sustainable planting

We'll select trees and plants that are both low-maintenance and long-lasting to ensure the garden remains attractive and manageable over time.

Cost-effective approach

The Council is taking a cost-effective approach to the project by:

  • reusing materials to reduce construction costs
  • designing for low maintenance to minimise long-term expenses
  • exploring internal and external funding options to deliver the project.

We aim to complete the project in 2026.
