Permissions and permits

There are various times when you will need our permission for a road-related activity.

Occupying the road

Occupying the road with building materials (for example, scaffolding) storage of materials, siting of crane, hoarding etc. The charge is per month or part thereof, and relates to public or private road networks. To apply please complete TOR1 application form.

Opening the road

Applications for permission to carry out excavations on roads and footpaths.  Placing apparatus in a road, such as a sewer connection at a new house.  Relates to public or private road networks. First week of opening, with a charge for each additional week or part week thereafter.

Closing a road

For a street party or community event. For further information, please see the Traffic Regulation Orders article. Relates to public or private road networks. To apply, please complete a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) form.

Creating a new access across a footway (Formation of driveway) (vehicle crossover)

Allows residents and businesses to take access to a road across an existing footway. The fee covers the processing of the application. Relates to public road network. 

Apply by completing an online crossover permit application form which can be found under the related documents section on this page or writing to the address listed.

Placing a skip on the road 

Relates to public or private road networks.  To apply, please call us on the telephone number listed.

Placing wires, beams or cables over a road 

An example would be wires to carry bunting for a community event. No charge, relates to public or private road networks.  To apply please e-mail or write to us at the address below.

Placing, painting or fixing a sign, notice or picture

No charge, relates to public or private road networks. To apply please e-mail or write to us at the address below.

Application for Street Markets, Stalls or Displays 

No charge. Relates to public road network.

To apply, please complete an application form.

Application to use portable light signals 

Contractors and public utility companies are required to apply for a permit from the Council when using portable traffic signals.

Please note there is a one month minimum charge.

Please note all forms provided must be signed and returned to our office address shown.

In addition to these activities, any hauliers transporting their vehicle in or around Renfrewshire must notify the council of their intended vehicle movement.
