Commercial day care of dogs

Under the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963, those who run a dog day care centre must obtain a licence.

A dog day care centre is essentially a crèche for dogs, where owners drop dogs off and collect them later in the day. The dogs do not stay overnight at these types of premises.

The licence can stipulate a number of conditions to secure the safety and welfare of the dogs.

Who can apply?

Any fit and proper person who is not disqualified from keeping animals may apply.

How to apply for a licence

Applicants should complete the application form which is available below. On request an application form will be forwarded to the applicant for completion by post.

On receipt of the application form the council will arrange for an officer to carry out an inspection of the premises to ensure its suitability for housing animals.

A licence may or may not be issued dependent on the findings of the inspection.
