Money hack: get the right support to avoid money worries affecting your mental health

Debt can get your down, but there are things you can do to prevent it taking over your life.

Sometimes it can feel like a downward spiral. Having poor mental health can mean managing money is harder but worrying about money can make your mental health worse.

Advice Renfrewshire

A one-stop shop for any kind of advice you need. Call the freephone number 0808 164 2922 to find someone who can help you and give you confidential and impartial advice.



Registered charity Mind have tons of advice to help you manage through times when mental health impacts on managing your money or vice versa.



Renfrewshire charity have a FIRST Crisis freephone number 0800 221 8929 for when your world's falling apart, and you need to talk to someone.


Some top tips from the experts:

  • The earlier you get advice, the earlier you can sort things out and get peace of mind.
  • If you have bills and letters from creditors building up and are struggling to deal with them, please take that first step and get some free impartial advice. Our advice services are friendly and approachable and want to help.  They won't judge you.
  • Money and mental health are often linked. The advice is to take one step at a time - talk to someone you can trust like a friend or relative and get some support.  
  • If you're worrying about money get advice early don't wait until things get to crisis point to seek help. There are people who can help you budget, reduce your spending on things like energy bills, and make sure you've got all the money you are entitled to.
