Escape 'doon the watter' this Sma' Shot Day

Tomorrow sees the return of the annual Sma' Shot Day celebrations and the Weave Festival.

Sma' Shot Day is one of the world's oldest worker festivals and I'm delighted that we still celebrate what was an important moment in time for Paisley.

This year's event will take you on a trip 'doon the watter' with the 12-noon parade kicking off the festivities. I'm excited to see what the local community groups and performers can bring to the parade this year.

Last month, women and girls from across Renfrewshire marched in the Processions parade in Edinburgh to mark 100 years of women's suffrage, carrying handmade banners, and I'm pleased that these banners will also be marched through the streets of Paisley on Sma' Shot Day.

Activities continue throughout the day with the town centre transformed into a seaside escape - there's really no need to travel to the beach this weekend when you can experience it right here!

This year we also have a Youth Poetry Slam taking place to mark the Year of Young People 2018 where young people will be encouraged to express themselves through language and culture. Paisley has a long history of celebrating poetry and spoken word and I hope the young people taking part will inspire others to continue the tradition.

Of course, no Sma' Shot Day is complete without a trip to the Sma' Shot Cottages, where there'll be weaving demonstrations taking place all day.

Sma' Shot Day is one of Renfrewshire's key events and the incorporation of the Weave festival ensures there is something for all the family to take part in.

It'll be a great day out so grab your sun hat and join me in Paisley tomorrow for a trip 'doon the watter'!
