Renfrewshire Council

Holocaust Memorial Service 2016

Holocaust Memorial Day 2018

On Tuesday 23 January, we will commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day - which takes place on 27 January - in a joint service with East Renfrewshire Council.

The theme for this year's memorial is 'The Power of Words' and explores the impact that language had in the Holocaust and other subsequent genocides - from propaganda and slogans to the words we see and hear today. I'm sure you will agree that the theme is very pertinent to modern day use of social media, amongst both children and adults alike.

I will be attending this year's service to give the Vote of Thanks and I'm pleased to see pupils from Linwood High will be joining me in taking part in the service with a performance of 'The Power of Words' - the preparation of which I'm sure will help them to understand the gravity of what took place.

It is vital that we remember the millions who lost their lives through the Holocaust, and other genocides since, as well as the millions who have suffered through persecution.

It is important that our young people learn from such atrocities, that we do not forget about the horrific events of the past and we use these lessons to inform the future.

Therefore, we will mark the occasion with a special public service at East Renfrewshire's Barrhead High School, beginning at 7:30pm.

All are welcome to come along and pay your respects to those who suffered through persecution and to learn more about the events which have taken place.
