Renfrewshire Council

Online shopping and recycling

Think outside the box this Christmas

Online shopping is on the rise in Renfrewshire as residents embrace the convenience of buying gifts without battling the Christmas crowds.

But with the growing number of packages being delivered to the door comes a corresponding responsibility to employ the three R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Depute Convener of the Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, Councillor Natalie Don said: "Christmas is definitely a time when excess packaging from online purchases becomes very noticeable.

"People often end up with far more packaging than product so it's important that it doesn't end up in landfill if there is an alternative."

Online purchases often come in plastic and cardboard wrapping, as well as the boxes and paper or foam packaging designed to protect the product.

"When battling through all the excess packaging that can surround your online purchases, I encourage people to put aside all the materials that can be reused or recycled," Councillor Don said.

"Reusing materials is great because you're saving the energy that goes into recycling them - you can easily reuse packing boxes and wrapping materials for sending out items at a future date.

"Cardboard boxes, paper style wrapping paper and paper cards can all be recycled in your blue bin- just be sure to remove all sellotape and polystyrene packaging first.

"Renfrewshire bin collection services will run all through the festive period, so your rubbish and recycling will be collected if they are scheduled over the period.

"Just be aware that there are no bin collections on for Christmas Day or New Year's Day. Bins scheduled for those days will be collected the day before so put them out before 7am to avoid missing out."

Councillor Don encouraged people to explore options for having items delivered in less packaging.

"You can often reduce the packaging your online shopping comes in by checking if the company offers different packing options," she said.

"Consider opting out of having a packing box and simply get the gift box labelled with your address, or select the 'no gift wrapping' option and use your own recycled paper instead."
