REHIS Food Hygiene Training

Renfrewshire Council offers three Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) Food Hygiene Courses by e-learning.

These self-study training courses consist of interactive, innovative e-learning training materials. The flexible format:

  • is great if you would find it difficult to attend a full time course.
  • allows you to access the training at a convenient time.
  • allows you to work at a pace that suits you.

Full tutor support is given throughout the courses by an experienced Food Hygiene trainer.

1. REHIS Introduction to Food Hygiene (Equivalent to Level 1 training)
 

Who is it for?

The course meets the initial training requirements of food safety law and should be taken by new food handlers/volunteers before being allowed to start work for the first time.

The course also meets the requirements for induction training for staff who are not primarily food handlers e.g. care assistants, kitchen porters, nursery nurses.

Is there an exam?

There is no exam at the end of this course but an on- line quiz is completed, and a Certificate of Attendance is Awarded.

How long does it take?

The course should take around 2-3 hours to complete.

What does the course cost?

£15 per person.

2. REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene (Equivalent to Level 2 training)

 

Who is it for?

This course is a recognised qualification and is designed for all food handlers working in all aspects of the food industry, including: catering/licensed trade, food production and processing industries, restaurants & cafés and for those in caring and voluntary situations involving food preparation or handling. It meets the requirements of current Food Hygiene Law; 'Food handlers must be trained to a level to allow them to carry out their job safely.' and is the most popular course we offer.

What's included?

The REHIS Elementary e-learning pack includes:

  • Access to the on-line training course.
  • The REHIS Food Hygiene Handbook for Scotland.
  • 'A Question of Food Hygiene for Scotland' Elementary  workbook. (filled in as you go through each module)
  • Relevant web links, information leaflets and background reading list.
  • An e-Learning User Guide.
  • Access to tutor support at all stages by telephone, e mail or in person.
  • Exam fee and Pass Certificate on completion

On-line courses are only available in English but Elementary Food Hygiene Handbooks and exams papers are available in Bengali, Chinese (trad.), Chinese (simplified), Hindi, Polish, Punjabi, Russian, Slovakian, Spanish, Thai, Urdu.

Is there an exam?

On completion of the course candidates sit the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene exam which is a 30 question multiple choice paper. (This is done in the presence of your tutor). This exam is available in a number of different languages. The pass mark is 60% and successful candidates will receive the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate. There is no expiry on this certificate but we recommend knowledge is refreshed every 3-5 years.

How long does it take?

The course should take around 6 hours to complete.

What does the course cost?

£50 per person.

3. REHIS Intermediate Food Hygiene (Equivalent to Level 3 training)
 

Who is it for?

This course is aimed at senior staff responsible for food safety, HACCP and the supervision of staff e.g. Head Chefs, Catering Managers, The course provides candidates with essential, practical information they need, to be able to manage staff to provide safe food and to comply with legislative requirements. Candidates should ideally posses an Elementary Food Hygiene qualification or equivalent as a minimum entry requirement.

  • Exam fee and Pass Certificate on completion.

Is there an exam?

On completion of the course, candidates sit the REHIS Intermediate Food Hygiene examination. The exam consists of 20 x 5 mark short answer questions and lasts approx 2½ hours. This exam will take place at a mutually suitable location in the presence of the Tutor. Successful candidates will receive the REHIS Intermediate Food Hygiene Certificate.

How long does it take?

The online training has a one-year licence valid from candidate registration. Candidates will work through the training pack materials at their own pace, but it is recommended that the course is completed within a six month period. Approximate study time required: 25 to 35 hours.

£250 per person.
