Community members and business owners gather to support For Paisley 2021 campaign

Show of public support For Paisley 2021 campaign

I was proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with people from local business, culture and community groups - and pupils from Gleniffer High - for the launch of a new campaign For Paisley 2021 right in the heart of the town.

The For Paisley 2021 campaign is about giving everyone in Paisley, Renfrewshire and beyond the chance to share what they love about the town and fly the flag for the culture bid.

It is backed by a new toolkit - called a brand book - that means anyone can access For Paisley 2021 posters, the Paisley 2021 logo, get ideas for Paisley 2021 events and upload the For Paisley 2021 twibbon to their Facebook and Twitter profile.

There are also loads more facts about Paisley's heritage and interesting facts about the town in the brand book. It's well worth a look.

Winning the UK City of Culture 2021 title would make a massive difference to the town, and everybody in Paisley and Renfrewshire would feel the economic and social benefits. The next few years are going to be such an exciting journey for the town and we want as many people as possible to come with us.

On top of that, we learned that Paisley Museum will miss out on the most recent round of lottery funding. While we are disappointed, there remains many other routes through which external funding will be available and our commitment to turning Paisley Museum into an international-class destination remains as strong as ever.

We received extremely positive feedback from the Heritage Lottery Fund and often applications of this kind are not funded at the first attempt- but are successful when reapplying.

The feedback received has further outlined the exciting nature of this project and it's one which will put Paisley on the map as a tourist destination.

Showcasing our internationally-significant collections will increase visitor numbers, bring a high volume of footfall into the town centre and continue the redevelopment of Paisley High Street - with the museum store project showcasing Paisley's unique story and reconnecting the town with our illustrious history.

Some of the star items in the museum include the world's finest collection of Paisley Shawls, a working jacquard loom of the kind used by 19th century weavers, a full copy of The Birds of America, considered among the world's most desirable books, and one of the finest studio ceramics collections in the UK.
