Rules for leaving Great Britain and claiming Housing Benefit

There are rules called 'temporary absence rules' that set the amount of time you are allowed to leave Great Britain (Scotland, England and Wales) for, and still claim Housing Benefit.

These rules change from 28 July 2016, down to four weeks.

There will be limited exceptions to this.

What does this mean for me?

If you claim Housing Benefit and plan to leave Great Britain for more than four weeks - you may not receive any Housing Benefit for this time.

Because your Housing Benefit is in place to meet all or some of your rent - you will need to cover any rent costs during this time.
