Investing in our children's future

I firmly believe that investing in our children's education takes a holistic approach - one that includes funding extra teachers in our schools but also investing in school buildings. So it is great to see the latest stage of Renfrewshire Council's £53m school investment programme being marked with a £4m contract to build a new primary school in Paisley.

Next month, work will start on site at Bankfoot Road/Blackstoun Road to build the new St Fergus primary school. A new build for St Fergus will mean a fresh, fit for purpose learning environment for pupils. Work is expected to be completed next spring (2017).

Construction work is also taking place at Mossvale Primary School and Nursery and St James' Primary School shared campus in Paisley to upgrade the existing building in a £4m refurbishment project. And progress is being made in the £18million Additional Support Needs School in Linwood, although the timetable for completion is being revised due to the adverse weather and design and construction considerations.

Nurseries and pre 5 centres have also been part of the plan, with nine centres already adapted to create an improved play and learning space for younger children. Extensions to Glendee and Bridge of Weir Pre 5 Centres have recently been completed, and there's work planned for two more centres in the pipeline.
