Renfrewshire Council

600 hours of early learning and childcare

A free early learning and childcare place for up to 600 hours is available for every three and four year old child who lives in Renfrewshire and for some 2 year old children whose parents are in receipt of eligible benefits, looked after or have been in a kinship placement at any time since their 2nd birthday.

Places are provided in either Renfrewshire Council nurseries or in private or voluntary sector nurseries which have been approved to provide early learning and childcare on behalf of Renfrewshire Council.

What does this mean?

The 600 hours of early learning and childcare can be used flexibly; you should discuss your requirements with the nursery you wish to attend. The nursery you apply to can advise you how best they can meet your needs. Trained and experienced nursery staff organise a stimulating programme of educational experiences based on the Curriculum for Excellence/Pre-Birth to Three.

Application for delayed admission to primary school - An additional year of early education and childcare

Under current legislation, if your child is aged between four and a half and five years old at the start of the school session you have a choice about when your child starts primary school.  If your child's birthday is in January or February, you have the right to delay entry to primary school and to have an additional year of free early education and childcare.

You can also request delayed entry to school if your child's birthday is from September to December. There is no automatic right to an additional early education and childcare year in these circumstances and the decision to provide an additional year will be made by the local authority in the best interests of the child.

You can apply for an additional year of early education and childcare by contacting the nursery your child attends or by printing off and completing the form below and returning it to the nursery.
