If you don't pay your council tax

Payment due dates, what happens when you don't pay, get help with paying your council tax.

We rely on the Council Tax to fund important services such as education, social care and libraries.

If we can't collect the Council Tax on time, it makes it harder for us to pay for these services. Because of this, we send notification to people when their Council Tax instalments are overdue.

Payment due dates

You can pay your Council Tax in 10 monthly instalments from April to January. The payments are due on the 1st of the month. You must pay the amounts shown on your Council Tax bill, and your payments should reach us on or before the day the instalment is due.

If you pay by direct debit you can choose to pay either on the 1st, 14th or 27th of each month.

What happens when you don't pay

If you fail to pay any instalment, as advised in your Council Tax Demand Notice, by the due date, you will be issued with a 'First Reminder Notice' stating the amount that must be paid within 7 days.

If you fail to pay the instalment amount shown on the First Reminder Notice within 7 days you will lose the right to pay the remainder of the account by instalments. The full year's outstanding balance becomes due and payable within a further 7 days (i.e. within 14 days of receipt of the First Reminder Notice). If you fail to pay the full balance of your account we will apply to the Sheriff Court for a Summary Warrant for the full balance plus 10% statutory addition without further notice.

If you do pay the instalment amount shown on the First Reminder Notice within 7 days you should note that you are entitled to a 'Second and Final Reminder Notice' within the financial year (1st April to 31st March) to allow payment to continue by instalments. If you fail to pay the instalment amount in accordance with the 'Second and Final Reminder Notice' (within 7 days) you lose the right to pay the remainder of the account by instalments. You will then have to pay the full amount of council tax you owe within another 7 days (i.e. within 14 days of receipt of the Second and Final Reminder Notice). If you do not pay the full amount we will apply to the Sheriff Court for a Summary Warrant for the full balance plus 10% statutory addition without further notice.

If you do pay the instalment amount shown on the Second and Final Reminder Notice within 7 days you should note that if you fail to pay another instalment by the due date you will not receive a third notice. We will apply to the Sheriff Court for a Summary Warrant for the full balance plus 10% statutory addition without further notice.
