Renfrewshire Council

Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS)

AMIDS is Scotland's home of manufacturing innovation.

Its development is a collaborative project, led by Renfrewshire Council.

Every aspect of AMIDS is focused on a net zero future.

Advanced manufacturing uses the latest research and technology to manufacture in a better way, in a cleaner, greener way, making companies more productive and more sustainable.

AMIDS provides the perfect environment to develop new ideas, new solutions and new products.

It boasts unrivalled connectivity and access to a highly skilled workforce, providing an environment which fosters collaboration and promotes health and sustainability.

With excellent walking and cycling routes around the district, a green energy network heating the buildings, riverside views and plenty places to meet colleagues, AMIDS has a unique campus feel.

What AMIDS is delivering

AMIDS success will provide a major boost to Scotland's manufacturing sector, driving the country's economic recovery and future prosperity by supporting and growing the local, national and global manufacturing supply chain and acting as a magnet for advanced manufacturing companies to locate and invest in Scotland.

Developing the district is bringing skilled jobs, training and opportunities to Renfrewshire, bolstering an already hugely productive manufacturing sector in Renfrewshire which provides more than 8,000 jobs - around 10% of total jobs in the area.

At AMIDS

AMIDS includes:

  • Netherton
  • Inchinnan Business Park
  • Westway

Netherton is a new development on land between the White Cart river and Glasgow Airport, Scotland's principal long haul airport and largest charter hub.

It is home to two new world-class innovation centres - the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) and the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre.

Facilities based here benefit from a state-of-the-art low carbon District Heating Network supplying heat and hot water 90% greener than a gas boiler.

Renfrewshire is also home to a number of world-class high-value manufacturing businesses, and many of them are based next to Netherton at Inchinnan Business Park and at Westway.

This includes renowned international manufacturers including Boeing, Rolls Royce, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Peak Scientific and Terumo Aortic.

There's also research and skills centres including NMIS Group facilities the University of Strathclyde's Advanced Forming Research Centre and the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre.

Funding through the Glasgow City Region City Deal has delivered the enabling infrastructure, better connecting AMIDS to nearby commercial centres and enhancing walking and cycling provision, while further City Deal funding is creating improved connections between the district and the wider Glasgow City Region through the first opening road bridge over the River Clyde at Renfrew.
