Colleagues urged to check their ID ahead of UK General Election

Valid photo identification (ID) is now a requirement for voters at all UK parliamentary elections, including UK general elections and by-elections.

All people voting in person will now need to show photographic ID at the polling station. Make sure you are ready to vote in the upcoming UK General Election by checking you have an accepted form of ID like a passport or driving licence.

This change is due to new legislation by the UK Government and does not apply at Scottish Parliament or Council elections.

In his April staff message, Chief Executive Alan Russell said:

"As the Returning Officer for Renfrewshire, I want to make you aware of an important change for voters in advance of the upcoming UK general election which must take place before the end of January 2025.

"For the first time in Renfrewshire, following the introduction of new legislation by the UK Government, every voter will need to provide identification (ID) to be able to cast your vote.

"Accepted forms of ID include a passport, driving licence, older persons or disabled persons bus pass and Young Scot card. You will be able to use expired ID if you are still recognisable from the photo.

"Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID will be able to apply for free ID online (GOV.UK website) or by completing a paper form.

"Please take note of the changes and check you have appropriate ID in place for when polling day arrives (Electoral Commission website)."
